It's hard to miss all the halloween pumpkin carving kits when visiting the grocery store in October. We used to carve jack-o-lanterns using real pumpkins, but the heat in southern California doesn't allow them to last more than a few days before starting rot. We thought it might be worth buying a fake foam pumpkin to see how carving one would turn out. Well it turned out great!
The foam jack-o-lanterns last a really long time and you don't have to do the tedious work of scraping out the seeds and innards of a real pumpkin. They're pretty durable and much lighter than a real pumpkin as well. And the same carving tool kits you would use on a real pumpkin can be used on the foam version. You follow the same carving method: You print out a pattern of your choice. Tape the pattern to your pumpkin. Make tack marks with a thumbtack or needle around the outline of your pattern. This will allow you to "connect the dots" with a utility saw. Remove the taped pattern. Then Cut the outlines you traced with your saw. Lastly, cut a lid on top to put some LED candles in. And you're done!
The better your carving skills are, the better your jack-o-lantern will look. Happy Halloween!
