The refrigerator that came with our place is on the smaller side which means we have very limited freezer space. Unfortunately the ice maker in the freezer isn't filtered and the ice ends up making drinks taste bad. We started buying ice from the store but with how little space we have the large bags of ice were taking up too much room.
We found the Frigidaire Self Cleaning Countertop Ice Maker. We liked that it could make up to 26lbs of ice in a day. Way more than we would normally need but would be great for a gathering. It is also really nice that there is a self cleaning option that takes about 30 minutes.
The ice maker can make two different sizes of bullet ice. It takes about 6 to 7 minutes for the small ice and 7 to 8 minutes for the large ice option. The first round of ice comes out smaller but all of the following cubes come out full size. It makes 9 cubes each cycle and you can fill a double rocks glass with the large cubes after 4 or so cycles.
The ice that gets collected in the basket will keep filling up until the sensor guages that the basket is full. The Frigidaire comes with a handy scoop tool that does a decent job of scooping out the ice. It should be noted that the ice maker is not a freezer and any bullet ice that is left in there for an extended period of time will begin to melt back into the water resevoir and the ice making process will continue. When the water gets too low the machine will stop and you will need to add more water.
The Frigidaire is quiet when in use. The only noise you will hear is when the ice drops into the collection basket. We like to store the remaining ice in the freezer in a freezer safe container. Once we're done using the ice maker, we like to drain it by pulling the plug located at the bottom of the machine into the sink. We don't want the water to get stagnant. Overall we've been very happy with our purchase as we've been able to use the water from our lifestraw pitcher to make clean tasting ice.
