IKEA Deck Tiles Review

Easy to install deck tiles

With the overwhelming amount of rain in Los Angeles this winter, we encountered a massive leak in our home. It resulted in our roof getting completely redone and our guest bedroom ceiling getting patched. While the repairs were close to being finished, we decided to spruce up the patio space on the roof with some new deck tiles from IKEA.

We mapped out how many tiles we would need on a google spreadsheet which added up to a total of 10 packs of tiles. The Runnen tiles from IKEA come in packs of nine. We decided to do a mix of 5 packs of the dark grey plastic tiles and 5 packs of the brown stained acacia wood tiles. We wouldn't say the tiles snap together as easy as Legos, but we figured out how to manipulate them to snap into place. You can apply enough pressure to fit them together with your bare hands. If you walk on them afterwards, anything that didn't click into place will definitely snap in with your full weight standing on them. We had a few pieces we needed to cut with a vibrating saw to fit on one edge of the decking which went great. We added trim around the edges to avoid tripping hazards and it gives a really smooth appearance.

Lastly, we coated the wood tiles with a colorless wood stain to help protect them from the weather and bring out the natural beauty of the wood. After leaving the stain to dry overnight, we added back all of our plants and outside furniture. The tiles look amazing and were fairly easy to put together. We would definitely recommend the Runnen tiles to anyone looking to put together a quick an easy deck. After all the rain we've had this year, it's nice to get back in our outdoor space and enjoy our new patio.
