Rum Balls- Halloween Treat

Here is a rum ball recipe I usually make during the holiday season for a cookie exchange but this year we decided to jazz them up for a fun Halloween party treat! We decided to make witches' brooms and mummy heads.

Halloween Rum Balls

Rum Ball Recipe:

  • 11oz box of Nilla Wafers

  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup toasted walnuts

  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup of dark rum

  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup additional confectioners sugar for rolling

Halloween Decoration Ingredients:

Step 1

In a food processor pour in 3 to 4 cups of Nilla Wafers, about an 11oz box. Pulse until finely crushed. Then pour the contents into a large bowl and set aside.

Step 2

In a pan add your walnuts and toast them for about 4 to 5 minutes while stirring periodically. Add your walnuts to the food processor and pulse until finely chopped then add to your Nilla Wafer bowl.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, set in your sifter and add 1 cup of confectioners sugar, cocoa powder, and allspice and sift. Once sifted, add the corn syrup and dark rum and whisk together. When it is all nicely stirred pour into your Nilla Wafer and walnut mix and stir together. Place in the fridge for about 20 minutes to let it begin to firm up slightly.

Step 4

Remove from fridge and scoop with a spoon and roll them into 1 inch balls. Then in a small bowl with the additional confectioners sugar, roll the rum balls until coated on all sides with the sugar. Set onto a parchment lined baking tray.

Step 5

If you decide to make some witches brooms, take your pretzel stick and place into the center of your rum ball. If you are making mummy heads no need for a pretzel stick. Cover with plastic wrap then place your tray into the fridge and let chill for at least 2 hours.

Step 6

Remove rum balls from the refrigerator. For the brooms, we picked up a chocolate fudge premade frosting. Take the frosting and put into a piping bag, we used a reusable pastry bag with a small round tip. Proceed to make lines from the bottom of the rum ball base up to the pretzel stick. We found going from bottom to top worked better for us. Keep making lines around the rum ball until you've made it all the way around. For the mummy heads, make criss cross lines with some white icing. Then add 2 eyes with some black icing.

Step 7

Place the rum balls back in the fridge until you're ready to serve. Enjoy!
